Traction alopecia is a common cause of hair loss for patients with Afro hair due to the popularity of braiding Afro hair into tight styles or wearing a weave. This type of hair loss occurs when continual pressure is put on the hair follicle, leading it to produce weaker hair, and if the pressure is sustained over an extended period of time, hair can stop growing completely. We have found that our unique high strength minoxidil cream can be particularly effective in regrowing patches of hair, even stubborn ones that havent responded to lower strength treatments.
Another condition that we sometimes see in patients with Afro hair is Follicular Degeneration Syndrome. This syndrome is also known as Central Progressive Alopecia or Hot Comb Alopecia. This is a form of scarring alopecia which usually appears as large areas of diffuse thinning, usually extending outwards from the vertex. Skin biopsies indicate that the syndrome involves the inflammation of affected hair follicles and premature desquamation (shedding) of hair follicle inner root sheath. We can treat the syndrome at the Centre, although when the area scars. hair regrowth may be partial.
Chemical trauma can occur when a variety of chemical products are used consecutively, such as permanent dyes and relaxers. It is best to use just one of these two products on hair to avoid the increased likelihood of trauma. Again, chemical trauma can be treated at the Centre, although once use of the offending products has been stopped, hair should return to its previous condition. If it doesnt, a hair loss treatment programme which features minoxidil and the nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics may be useful, alongside the FDA cleared LaserComb and clinical treatment therapy.
