After a recent query from a patient concerning our shampoos and conditioners, we decided to take a closer look at the ingredients known as parabens: what are they, what are people saying about them, and why are they included in some of our products?
What Are Parabens?
Parabens are preservatives that are added to cosmetic products in order to ensure that they have a long and safe shelf life: they prevent fungus and other nasty things growing. This doesnt mean that they are harsh chemicals, though, in fact they are often similar and even identical to anti-microbial agents found in some plants and shrubs, including edible berries.
But Didnt I Hear That Theyre Bad For You?
Parabens are known for being one of the least allergenic and sensitising preservatives currently in use. There has been some debate about the possibility that they might migrate when applied to the skin - for instance as a deodorant - but no substantial studies have proven that this is significant in any illnesses or other negative side effects.
It is also important to note that, when included in a shampoo or conditioner, parabens are water soluble and therefore easily rinsed off, and so debate about their use in products that stay on the skin is not directly relevant.
The Final Word: A Doctors View
Our doctor, Dr Elena Koleva, has researched the topic in detail, and has reaffirmed her conclusion that parabens are "safe to be used" in our products; moreover they are essential in ensuring that the products stay in their optimum condition. Do contact us if you would like further information.
